SEMI E4 line control ignores octets other than ENQ, EOT, ACK, and NAK. The endpoint counts each such octet and reports it in the optional diagnostics log (secs1 unknown_control_ignored). While the reply to a sent block is awaited, such an octet counts as a reply other than ACK.
